In 2002 an American teacher, full of dreams of the Silk Road and visions of adventure, brought his family to Xinjiang, China's westernmost outpost. In Xinjiang, they were the only Western family in eight hundred miles, but lived a comparatively normal life -- one full of yurts, yak yoghurt, and camel rides.
