James Challis

James Challis was a British clergyman and astronomer best known for his work at the Cambridge Observatory and for missing the opportunity to identify Neptune in 1846. He served as Plumian Professor of Astronomy and Experimental Philosophy and investigated a wide range of physical phenomena, though his lasting reputation rests mainly on astronomy.
